The merchant services industry can be very complicated from the transaction process to the pricing. Honest and relible merchant service reps, I **** to say it, are hard to come by. Here are a couple of things to consider:

The lowest % offered may not always be the best percentage for you.
For example, Lets say you have an average ticket under $15.

A low rate of 1.75% may not be the best option for you. Due to the transaction fee of $0.25. In all you would pay about $0.42 for a $10 transaction.

Visa/MC offers a different cost structure for those low average ticket businesses. If a rep doesnt know this you will only see them offer the program above.

However, you would be much better off paying the higher 1.85% and getting the lower $0.15/trans, giving you a total cost of $0.34 on a $10 sale.

A knowledgable rep can put the right pricing structure together for your business type. Here is another example, one I see too often.
If you have a busines that takes all your credit card orders over the phone or through the mail, your lowest rate should be over 2%. WHY?
Due to the pricing structure from Visa/MC, if you key enter a credit card sale, that sale autimatically gets a higher charge. If you are on the lower rate plan, which is designed only for retail swiped transactions, of say 1.75%, you will be charged about .75% more on every key entered sale. Wow, you’ll end up paying 2.50% or more on all your transactions.

If a rep knows that you have this type of business before setting up your account, he can give you a rate just over 2% for all you keyed transactions. It may look higher to start with, but it will save you a bundle later on.

This is the type of service we provide at OmniTranz. We try to explain how a transaction works, best practices to get best rates, and place you on the right pricing program for your business.

i think the people answering questions about their services can get testy at times, specially when the person at the other end of the line can’t understand what they’re explaining. There was this one provider, though, adultmerchantpay, who had this girl from sales, zara, i think her name was, she was nice, i’d say she’s the “patient personnel” you’re looking for. Give it a shot, man, but do try to absorb what she’s trying to explain, ok?

I would suggest working with a company that can explain the different rate structures for your business while also being able to match your businesses’ merchant account needs directly. There are a number of good companies. A good company will be able to customize the rates specifically for your business. I personally have used since they are easy to work with.
