How can i take payments while i wait for my merchant account?

Note: I ship goods. Not going to use paypal and UK based

Paypal of course maybe even better than a merchant account.

I would reconsider the Paypal option. There are plenty of businesses who ship goods in the US that accept Paypal. It is fast and secure and the fees are not unreasonable.
You’re going to lose on bank transfers because of the wire fees, and checks because they have to clear-and-exchange, which leaves you open to risk if you ship before they clear.
there’s also western union – fees – and you also will look like a scammer.
If not paypal, there’s moneybookers, or 2checkout. but they all work the same. I’ve been doing paypal business since 1999 with no issues. My own business issues merchant accounts, but US only.

You really need to check with the bank that you set up the merchant account with, not here.
