Majority (about 75%) pays me via Paypal, while only about 10% pays me via credit card through my merchant account (my own website). The rest pays via check and money order.
I always believe in offering more options to the buyers and making it convenient to pay you. So I suggest you use both, as there are buyers who either don’t have a Paypal account or refuses to use Paypal when paying
Just make sure when you offer your merchant account that you know how to detect fraud — e.g. make sure your payment form gets the IP address and run that IP address with ARIN.net (or APNIC or RIPE.net), check for the address and whether everything matches, etc.
I had been with paypal and ebay for 8 years when they suddenly closed my paypal account over a misunderstanding. I was not given any opportunity to explain or resolve the problem, simply had my account closed with no hope of restoration. I had been selling Bible study mp3 Cd’s and had a customer who wanted to pay me for e firearm that I sold them and send the money to my paypal account. Pay pal noticed the transaction on my account and shut me down the same day with no warning or questions about what the transaction was. When I explained to paypal that I was not aware that I could not accept a payment tp pay pal for a firearm, I assured them that I would never again accept a payment for any firearm and that I am a Christian ministry who distributes teaching CD’s not firearms. This was an isolated case and a mistake that I was not aware of. They closed me down with no possibility of restoration.
As a result, I lost all my customers, could sell nothing on ebay or my own web site, and was put essentially out of business.
I did nothing wrong yet was not given any opportunity restore my account. Once paypal makes a decision to close your account you are done and there is no recourse. I have since changed to my own credit card processing and am very happy.
Do not use paypal, they are difficult to deal with, have the highest fees and can close you down with no prior notice.
Comments on Should I use Paypal or my merchant account when selling on eBay?
I have both, and offer both to my buyers on ebay.
